If you’re getting ready for an embryo transfer, you’ve probably heard that you “must” have acupuncture on the day of the procedure, or on the evening before. But most clinics simply hand you a schedule without explaining your options, leaving you in the dark.
I believe you should be in the loop. There isn’t just one “perfect” way to do this. Here’s a simple guide to how we can customise your treatment so that it actually works for your body and your schedule.
1. Same-day treatment (my preferred route)
The main physical benefits of acupuncture — like relaxing your nervous system and pumping fresh, oxygenated blood to your uterus — peak right after the needles are used.
- The goal: we want this peak blood flow happening during your actual transfer.
- My solution: because I own my clinic and have multiple rooms, I can offer completely flexible timings. We schedule your session perfectly around your hospital time, so you get the peak physical benefits without any of the rush.
2. Same day vs. the evening before: a personal choice
Many dedicated acupuncturists recommend coming in the evening before your transfer. This is a very valid, patient-centred approach, designed to protect you from the stress and rush of a same-day commute.
Ultimately, choosing between the two isn’t a strict medical rule. It’s a person-by-person decision based on your life. We look at three things:
- Your stress levels: if a morning appointment makes you feel panicked, that stress tightens your blood vessels, which works against the needles.
- Your commute: how close are you to the clinic, and is the journey to the hospital easy or stressful?
- Your IVF clinic’s rules: does your clinic need you there hours early for blood tests, or are you simply turning up at the transfer time?
If day-of travel causes you genuine anxiety, the evening before is an excellent backup. But if we can make a same-day morning session work smoothly, the immediate physical benefits of same-day treatment are always the gold standard.
3. The “fusion” approach (how I like to work)
Some research leads clients to ask for only same-day sessions. Other research persuades them that weeks of sessions beforehand are needed. I believe the best approach is a mix of both.
- Instead of a rigid, one-size-fits-all calendar, we do regular sessions while you prepare your body — guided by a combination of your specific needs (medical, mental-emotional and logistical) and how you’re progressing with the IVF itself.
- We look at your medical scan results as you go.
- If your scans show your lining needs a little help, we do more sessions. If everything looks perfect, we focus on keeping you relaxed. Your body directs the treatment, not a textbook.
4. After the transfer: flexible post-care
Once the transfer is done, the pressure is off. In my opinion the post-transfer treatment isn’t as critical as the pre-transfer session, so we can be highly flexible with the timing to suit you.
- Next-day option: a relaxed session the very next day.
- Day 3 option: a session three days later. This is the exact time the embryo is trying to attach (implant) to your womb, which helps support your hormones and calm those “two-week wait” nerves.
- After that follow-up, the choice is entirely yours. If you’d like more sessions for stress relief, I’m here. If you’d rather rest at home, there’s absolutely no pressure.
The bottom line
Acupuncture should support your IVF cycle, not make it more stressful. By combining regular prep sessions with a relaxed, same-day transfer treatment, we give your embryo the best possible welcome.
